Describe the effects of the growth of cities during the nineteenth century and early twentieth century on the environment of America. Additionally, how were those cities and their populations were related to the rest of the world from the mid-nineteenth century until the 1950s? An acceptable essay will utilize extensively the latter chapters from Steinberg’s Down to Earth, summarizing information that Steinberg presented. You will find little information in the lectures which intentionally have focused elsewhere. Note the emphasized words/concepts; responses to these words/concepts should be the focus of the essay. The essay will be evaluated on how well the answer responds to these highlighted elements. Include a heading: your name, class title with course number, instructor’s name, and date. Do not use contractions. “However” should never be the first word in a sentence. Avoid the passive voice. After writing out a person’s full name, refer to that person by their last name only (i.e. Henry David Thoreau is Thoreau and never Henry).
